Textile art—particularly patchwork—has historically served as a form of visual storytelling and resistance. From the quilts crafted by women during the civil rights struggles in the United States to the indigenous textiles that recount stories of cultural resistance in Latin America, patchwork is a medium that unites fabric fragments to tell stories of community, struggle, and survival. Podestá’s works addressing immigration encourage a deeper dialogue regarding the need to craft policies that respect and protect the human rights of migrants and that promote their integration into host societies. Related with mental health, Seeds posits that beauty, honesty, and love are latent seeds residing within every human being.

Works such as Womevolution highlight stories of women—often ignored or silenced—as key contributions to disseminating the OAS’s work in raising awareness regarding the importance of gender equality. The need for sustainable development is highlighted through works such as Neotropical, in common spirit with OAS programs and policies, recognizing that the depletion of natural resources—without proper management—endangers not only the environment but also the security and well-being of vulnerable populations. It is with pride that the OAS AMA presents The Skin of Discomfort as an outstanding body of work interwoven with shared hemispheric values.
