In celebration of the V Inter-American Week for People of African Descent in the Americas, the Organization of American States is pleased to present a virtual art exhibition which depicts the storied journey of people of African Descent from overcoming slavery, to fighting for equality and triumphing in the face of adversity.
A masterful collation of artistic pieces curated from across the Americas, including national museums and academic institutions, as well as the Art Museum of the Americas, this exhibition seeks to amplify and humanize the shared stories of our people whose unassailable courage and demonstrable persistence left an indelible mark on our hemisphere and engendered numerous teaching moments in history, which merit the utmost recognition.
Guided by the OAS Plan of Action for the International Decade for People of African Descent (2016-2025) approved at the Regular Session of the OAS General Assembly in June 2016 and which calls on Member States to, inter alia, “promote the recognition of the history of persons of African descent, particularly the recognition of the consequences or legacies of the historical injustices of the enslavement of Africans in the Americas,” it is hoped that this exhibition will spur thoughtful reflection on our hemisphere’s past, inspire truthful analysis of the present, and embolden action to solidify a future based on tolerance, respect and equality amongst us all.
